New Years Party @ ArtLab Studios with Tribal Baroque

Yes New Years Eve Dec 31st 8pm No Cover Tribal Baroque @ ArtLab Studios 3536 Adams Ave San Diego 92116. Read the complete story and invite everyone you know to this great night of entertainment
Lila’Angelique One day in the Angel tunnel in New York's Central Park, when she was listening to Thoth while they were singing "Anya," it sounded like a baroque countertenor; but there rhythm, vocal whooping and roaring sounded so tribal, that Lila called there music “Tribal Baroque”. A combination of opposites: raw, howling singing, feet stomping rhythm, faces painted, breasts flopping, wild original costumes, ecstatic spiritual dancing combined with highly developed musical phrases, perfect pitch, Bulgarian-style operatic soprano and countertenor vocals, and classically influenced violin. Thus the name, "TRIBAL BAROQUE"

S.K. Thoth was born on June 19th, 1954 in Manhattan General Hospital to Elayne Jones, a tympanist with the New York City Opera, and George Kaufman, a doctor. They named him Stephen after Stephen Foster, the songwriter in the early 1900's. Stephen spent his early years in St. Albans, Queens. His parents had two more children, Harriet and Cheryl. He and his sisters attended the United Nations International School where Stephen showed himself to be an average student. Both parents were involved in the Civil Rights and anti-Vietnam War movements and took Stephen and his sisters on many marches in NYC and Washington. His father was one of the doctors who assisted the marchers who were beaten up by the police. At eight years old, after one year of piano lessons, he had a dream of someone giving him a violin. He began studying violin with Mara Dvonch, a friend of his mother's and the assistant concertmaster of the American Symphony Orchestra. Although recognized to have talent, he rarely practiced as much as his teacher would have liked, wanting to play baseball and tennis, and cook instead. Even so, he progressed steadily. His parents separated and divorced when he was ten years old. The separation forced he and his sisters to leave the United Nations International School to attend public school. He went to Junior High School 217. During junior high school, he began imagining and creating a mythological world, Festad, as a reaction to feeling alienated from his peers and after reading Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. He auditioned for and was accepted into La Guardia High School of Music and Art. Upon graduating he received the Memorial Award for over all musicianship. In 1972, his mother became tympanist for the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and moved he and his sisters to San Francisco. There he attended San Francisco State University as a music major where he met Richard Wiseman, a professor of comparative literature and an adept at Jungian psychoanalysis, who later became his adviser and mentor. Three years later, he transfered to San Diego State University as an astronomy major. After becoming disinterested in astronomy, physics and mathematics, he turned his interest and attention to opera, drama, and literature. He studied Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelugen and took classes in languages, philosophy, and playwriting, which led to him continuing to write about his mythological world Festad . . . As S.K. Thoth, he has been prayforming his solopera, THE HERMA:The Life and Land of Nular-in, daily at the Bethesda Terrace Arcade in New York City’s Central Park for more than ten years. In addition, he has prayformed the solopera in Sweden, Canada, Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands, and in the Bay Area, where he developed his work, for the AfroSolo ‘99 Theater Festival. He has appeared on The View, America’s Got Talent, and the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. In 2001, award winning director Sarah Kernochan made a documentary about Thoth’s life and work, which won the 2002 Academy Award for Documentary on a Short Subject. In June 2009, he released a book of short stories entitled Ruby and the Treehouse. In September 2009, Thoth released his eleventh CD with soprano and violinist, Lila’Angelique. He continues his study of theosophy, the eating and preparation of raw food, the assembling of the Encyclopedia of the Festad, and the writing of a novel about The Herma.

Lila’Angelique was born Caitlin Churchill Harkin with her twin sister Jamie Johnson on the 26th of February 1988 in New York City. Her preschool years were spent in Bergenfield, New Jersey, but her family moved to Nashville when she was 5. Both parents are professional musicians. Her mother, Caroline Peyton, is a singer who worked on Broadway. Her father, Brendan Harkin, is a guitarist and recording engineer who runs a full time recording studio in his home. In elementary school, she began Suzuki violin lessons when she saw a fellow student with a violin, but she quickly grew tired of the regimented group lessons and turned to studying classical at the Blair School of Music and Irish fiddle with private teachers. At 10, she was introduced to Verdi’s Rigoletto by her cousin and fell in love with opera. Delving passionately into the art form, she learned many operas by heart. One summer, two years later, she began voice lessons after discovering she had vibrato while singing along with Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro. At 13, she met her mentor, Will Griffin who nurtured and tutored her in philosophy, art and music. In High School, she was placed in advanced choirs and won talent shows with her twin sister, singing operatic duets such as “Sous le dôme épais” from Delibes’ Lakme and “We are women” from Bernstein’s Candide. She studied voice with Metropolitan Opera coloratura soprano Elizabeth Carter, and her technique advanced rapidly. Instead of paying attention in math class, she would study the libretto to Mozart’s Die Zauberflote. Many of her teachers and fellow students had trouble with her outlandish styles of clothing: cut up jumpsuits, tutu’s, tuxedos and clown makeup. Before her 18th birthday, she sang the duet “Ach, ich liebte” from Mozart’s Abduction from the Seraglio with Will Griffin on Nashville’s classical radio station, WPLN 90.3 . As a freshman at the University of Kentucky at Lexington, she played Ariel in Shakespeare’s The Tempest, composing original music for her character. She also played the title role in Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors. After a year in the university, she dropped out and moved to New York City to study at Circle in the Square Theatre School. She was frustrated by the school’s emotionally draining regimen and was also alienated from her peers. On October 11th 2008, she wandered into Central Park and stumbled upon Thoth in the Angel Tunnel. She became his only student. On March 2009, she joined him in prayformance and stopped going to theater school. In the fall, she and Thoth released a CD of their music recorded live. Presently, she and he perform their miniature tribal baroque operas throughout the world,

HOPE FOR PAWS Animal Rescue

OUR LIVES HAVE GONE TO THE DOGS
by Audrey and Eldad Hagar

The Hagars' organization
HOPE FOR PAWS rescues and rehabilitates abandoned and neglected animals for adoption to loving homes.
Their wonderful book is filled with photos and stories of many dogs they've saved over the years. A generous donor funded the book's production, meaning every penny of the $15 retail price will be invested in helping more animals ... making this a perfect holiday gift for animal lovers wanting to support animal rescue efforts.
Check out the book at Adams Ave. Books, on the corner of Adams and 35th, and visit www.hopeforpaws.org for more info about this group and its work.

Jaynes: Beaujolais Nouveau 2011 with My Main Man of Morgon, Jean Foillard

Like clockwork every year on the third Thursday of November there is a French wine released called Beaujolais Nouveau. Beaujolais Nouveau is a young, short ferment and thus low alcohol wine made from the primary grape of Beaujolais, gamay. The marking of this day began as a local tradition in Lyon France back in 1951 as a celebration of the year's harvest in which much wine was consumed and sold inexpensively around the local area. This quickly spread north to the wine bars of Paris and across France.

Soon enough an enterprising producer named George Deboeuf capitalized on this event and turned it into a worldwide phenomenon by exporting the wine. It became the wine world's Cinco De Maya. Unfortunately the quality of his wine and others quickly deteriorated as the craze for anything from Beaujolais skyrocketed.

Well why are you talking about a wine that may or may not be total crap? Well fellow wine geeks be damned, I love the original spirit behind this celebration and thankfully some of these wines are actually really great. We just happen to have the best of the best by my main man of Morgon, Jean Foillard. Jean Foillard is among a small vanguard of natural wine producers in Beaujolais making some of the most beautiful wines in the world right now. I literally just opened a bottle and am drinking a glass right now and loving it. Its so cool to have this early window into the wines of one of my favorite producers.

We will be pouring the 2011 Jean Foillard Beaujolais Nouveau tonight Thursday through the weekend. We hope you will come join us!

Reubens at Jaynes this week!

The Jaynes Pastrami Reuben is on the menu! Growing up, Jon often took the metro north train from Westport, CT in to the city and headed straight for one of two places. Uptown for Carnegie Deli or downtown to Katz's Deli for a Pastrami Reuben on Rye.

In our estimation there is little more comforting than Hot Pastrami, Sauerkraut, melted Swiss Cheese and Thousand Island Dressing on Rye bread.  At Jaynes we get the classic preparation just right, with Niman Ranch Pastrami, Bread and Cie Corn Rye, house made zucchini pickles and our hand-cut kennebec french fries. We will be serving this little taste of East Coast heaven Tuesday-Thursday this week for just $14.50

We hope to see everyone this week!

Jaynes Natural Wine Tasting Series: "Hungary" this Saturday October the 8th. 4-6pm

We are happy to announce a very exciting event for this month's Natural Wine Tasting Series this Saturday: Hungary! We will be joined by good friends Stetson Robbins and Matt Ahern from Blue Danube Wines, who are experts on this part of the world. Blue Danube and Jaynes are kindred spirits in promoting lesser known regions and indigenous varieties and this is another first ever in San Diego tasting that we're proud to be hosting. Be the first on your block to drink and pronounce Kékfrankos and Sparkling Tokaji! We will also be serving traditional Hungarian bites like Körözöt.

In Stetson's words: The food and wine culture of Hungary is one of Europe's oldest and most dynamic. The basin of the ancient Pannonian sea, Hungary is a veritable bread basket of vast fields of grain, fruitful orchards and game filled forest. Sporadic outcroppings of long dormant volcanoes and limestone massifs blanketed with indigenous vines, jut from these long plains. Here where the vine grows, people make the full flavored spicy foods and wines that separate the Hungarian palate from the rest of Europe's. This is just a taste of this unsung destination for gourmands, but one you will not quickly forget. I hope that you will be drawn to Hungary as we at Blue Danube Wine Co were. Cheers! Or as they say in Hungarian "Egészségedre!" and see you there!!

Natural Wine Tasting Series: Hungary
Saturday October 8th
6 wines plus hors d'oevres $20/pp. 4-6pm.
We recommend reservations for those staying for dinner. 619-563-1011

Natural Wine Tasting Series: Sicily at Jaynes Gastropub this Saturday

This Saturday, Sep. 10th - Natural Wine Tasting Series: Sicily
4-6pm - $20 per person
(includes 6 wines and light hors d'oeuvres)

We love Sicilian Wine!!!

We are happy to announce our next Saturday afternoon tasting featuring the exciting and cutting edge wines of Sicily. We will be joined by good friend and Italian Wine Guru, John Yelenosky (if you haven’t met him yet, enjoying a Jayne Burger at the bar, you need to!) and hosted by Deirdre O’Dwyer.

The wines of Italy seem to never stop impressing us and will always find a place our wine list. Sicily has more vineyards than any other region in Italy, though many of the grapes are turned into raisons and dessert wine, there are certainly gems to be found. From the intense Sparkling Nerello Mascalese from Murgo and the perfumed and bright Rami to the silky feminine notes of Frappato, we are in love! Please join us this Saturday to fall in love as well.

Stay for dinner and enjoy 25% off any bottle from the tasting.
Space is limited so we encourage reservations, 619.563.1011.

2007 Murgo, Brut Rose, Mt. Edna
2009 COS, Rami
2010 Tenuta Rapitala, Piano Maltese, Sicilia
2009 COS, Frappato, Sicilia
2008 COS, Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico, Frappato/Nero d’Avolo
2009 Mirabile, Nero d’Avolo

Jaynes News for the Weekend: Wiener Schnitzel, Farmer's Market Gems and Gaja!

Hello everyone! It's been a little while, but all is well here at Jaynes and with little Romy. Thank you to everyone for all your friendship and support during these REM-sleep free last few months.

Starting tonight and running through the weekend we have a few great specials, not the least of which is our Duroc Pork Wiener Schnitzel with Gruyere Spaetzle This is one of our top 5 dishes and I always get in big trouble with guests when I don't make an announcement! We are also serving the Leth Gruner Veltiner by the glass which is a perfect pairing. Gruner Veltiner is a white grape variety grown primarily in Austria and is one of the world's most versatile food wines. For beer drinkers we are now pouring Duvel on draft which isn't too shabby a combo either.

Soups on. We've been working closely with a Santa Monica Farmer's Market buyer who has been sourcing us some incredible produce. We found a squash varietal called Zephyr Squash from Jaime Farms that we've made into one of our best soups to date.

Also from the market comes a Crostini of Fava Bean Puree on grilled Bread and Cie lemon Pugliese bread with shaved pecorino and mint.

GAJA by the glass! Angelo Gaja is the King of modern Italian wines and we are excited to be pouring his 2008 Bolgheri Rosso "Promis" from his Ca Marcanda Tuscany estate. It is a blend of Merlot, Syrah and Sangiovese and we will be pouring it all weekend by the glass.

Natural Wine Tasting Series Continues. Saturday September 10th. We are hosting a Sicilian Wine Tasting the afternoon of Saturday September the 10th from 4-6pm with good friend John Yelenosky. Sicily is now creating some of the most exciting wines in Italy and we'll have some of the best here. Full details coming next week.

Come visit us for our Cheap and Cheerful Happy Hour Tuesday-Saturday from 5-6:30 in the bar. $4 Guinness and Trumer, wine and cocktail specials and the most delicous $5 bar menu around! If you haven't become acquainted you definitely need to meet our Sarah Ellis.

We hope to see you all this weekend!

Greek Austerity You Want? 2010 Domaine Sigalas Asirtiko-Athiri at Jaynes Gastropub

As the Greek crisis unfolds I just received this incredible picture from  Jaynes comrade Jeremy Parzen taken from the Sigalas Winery in Santorini.   Jeremy has spent the past year as an ambassador for Greek wines heading up the Boutari Social Media Project and I urge you to  head over to his blog and read about his Aegean adventure at Do Bianchi happening right now.

We've been digging into a lot of the lesser publicized yet great wine regions this year.   The Greek wines in particular have filled our punch card full of high marks.   We are now pouring the 2010 Domaine Sigalas Asirtiko-Athiri by the glass. This is a mineral driven wine with racy acidity and generous fruit.  An excellent hot weather seafood wine,no doubt, that I would liken to a Loire Valley Muscadet with just a touch of salinity from the nearby sea.   This predominant grape is Asirtiko or Assyrtiko that is native to the island of Santorini where wine has been made for over 3500 years. The vines grow in a soil of Volcanic ash in a unique basket shaped pattern to protect themselves from the sea winds and high temperatures. Talk about terroir!

Get back safe Jeremy and thanks for your positive coverage of Greece.   They sure could use it right about now.

Union Tribune Superdiners nod to the Jayne Burger

The most often heard guest question has to be.  "What is the best thing on the menu?"  Well if there was a fire and we were forced to rescue just one recipe, it would have to be the Jayne Burger.

One thing we know here at Jaynes is our burger.  We've nailed the recipe and it will never leave menu.    Sara Hanson "Superdiner" from the Sarkus wine blog  gave us a nice nod in the Union Trib Column on the city's best burger today.  She describes our burger thusly:   "Jayne’s Gastropub wins for highest quality and most consistent. They use all-natural, hormone/antibiotic-free Niman Ranch ground beef—topped with Vermont cheddar and garlic aioli. But the real secret is Jayne’s house-made pickled onions, which give the burger an auxiliary sweet-&-salty component."   Thanks for noticing Sara.  The onions are indeed one of the great assets of the Jayne Burger.  We urge all to try the burger in its original form without any modifications.   We'll happily prepare it rare to well done.

Tuesday is the best night to come try it.  $16 for the Jayne Burger and any draft beer.  The Jayne Burger is served with a heaping portion of our hand cut double cooked Kennebec fries.    We also feature a 1/2 size version with fries during our happy hour for only $5 which may just be the best happy hour meal in the city.

Jon breaks ground on the Jaynes Garden.

We are very fortunate here at Jaynes to have a beautiful outdoor patio space.   We also happen to have a nice little yard on the other side of the hedge for Tallulah to run around in.    Tallulah is now going to have to make do with her daily trips to the Grape Street Dog Park because we are converting that space into the Jaynes Garden.   The plot has direct southern exposure and should turn out a nice crop.

My parents weren't big on allowances so we all worked as kids.  I had a commercial landscaping company in my teens which is a long, cautionary tale of a teenager making way too money and my sisters cleaned up selling fruits and vegetables in front of our house in Westport CT.   Our house was built in the early Federal Period and like many homes from that period there was a family farm on the property.   It was very common to find pieces or farm tools and horseshoes buried in the soil.   On the southern side of the property there was a beautiful field.  It was like having Andrew Wyeth's Christina's World in our backyard.  On the edge of this field was my favorite garden because it specialized in strawberries.   It is very exciting to finally get this project going and to get back to my roots, so to speak.   We hope to make this garden an integral part of Jaynes from kitchen to bar.

I'm starting to daydream so I'd better get back to work.   Mama Jayne has some Sun Gold Heirloom Tomato seedlings ready to go.   Here are some pictures from the ground breaking.  Stay tuned for more pictures and news.  Who knows, I may be a  wearing a Baby Bjorn in the next installment!

Tap Hunter blog feature...

Thanks for Tap Hunter for the write up.

TapHunter.com’s American Craft Beer Week blogging series continues with an in-depth look at brewer Lee Chase’s efforts to raise the beer bar (part 1 and 2 here). Above: Chase writing up his beer offering for the first in a series of coffee beers by Automatic Brewing. More on Chase’s coffee series and what we can expect to drink by summer time, below.

Artisan pizza pies from Blind Lady Ale House decorate the cover of this month’s San Diego Magazine, the perfect snack to accompany Candace Woo’s Critic’s Pick for ‘Best Craft Beer Selection’ in town. BLAH’s curated selection of craft beers from around the world to those small batches made in-house represent brewer Lee Chase’s dedication to quality, a relevant concern as San Diego breweries and pubs grow in numbers. Curious to find out more on Chase’s quest to raise the beer bar, TapHunter.com asked a few questions exploring BLAH’s involvement with the Honest Pint Project, the quest for clean beer, and an expansion for Automatic Brewing Company debuting this summer.
TapHunter: What did you learn at Stone Brewing Company that you still put to use and think about in your endeavors at Blind Lady and/or Automatic Brewing Co?
Chase: Undoubtedly, I learned a ton from my years working at Stone: We grew the brewery from 0-55,000 barrels of beer per year over the 9+ years I was there. However, a lot of that growth was applying what I’d learned from studying Malting & Brewing Science at UC Davis. Read More...

Massage heals the tissues of the body

Massage heals the tissues of the body
Saturday, April 09, 2011 by: James Schreiber

(NaturalNews) Brush aside any thoughts that massage is only a luxury splurge that has no real health benefits. To the contrary, hands-on healing helps you unwind, lowers blood pressure, promotes muscle relaxation and boosts your immune system. During a massage session, massage therapists use their hands and fingers to press and manipulate your skin, tendons, ligaments and muscles. The strokes gently move your blood, oxygen and lymph to various tissues and organs in a way that normally doesn't happen in the bodies of most people. As a result, the person who is receiving the massage experiences a level of physical and mental renewal that is hard to surpass.

Hidden Health Benefits of Human Touch

Today, numerous well respected studies indicate that massage therapy doesn't only feel good, it also may be good for you. Take a look at the health benefits below and discover the power of human touch:
  • Stress & anxiety relief
  • Muscle relaxation
  • Blood pressure control
  • Better circulation
  • Pain reduction
  • Enhanced cancer treatment
  • Improved quality of sleep
But there's more - a study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine suggests that individuals who undergo massage therapy experience measurable improvements in their immune response.

Mark Rapaport, M.D., and his colleagues from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center followed 53 healthy adults who were divided into two groups: The participants received either 45 minutes of Swedish massage or the same amount of time of light touch massage, which is much milder and served mainly as a comparison to the more vigorous Swedish massage. After examining their blood samples, the scientists found that people in the Swedish massage group experienced a decrease in cortisol and a significant increase in lymphocytes, cells that keep our immune system strong.

"More research is ahead of us but it appears that a single massage may deliver a measurable benefit," Rapaport said in a news release.

Massage is far more potent therapy than most people realize. In fact, it can (and should) replace analgesics as a treatment for tension headaches. As it turns out, it takes only a 30-minute massage on cervical trigger points to boost autonomic nervous system regulation and alleviate the symptoms. Patients also report an improvement in their psychological and physiological state, which goes hand in hand with the reduction in stress and anxiety associated with such a disturbing condition.

Stress and lack of rest have devastating effects on our health, fitness and beauty. Don't be afraid to find yourself a good massage therapist and get some healing on a regular basis. When you're taking care of your skin and what's beneath it, you are taking care of your whole world.

Introducing, Yen4Zen Yoga Studio!!

Hello! Namaste!
For those of you who have yet to be enlightened... There's a new Yoga Studio in town!
Yen4Zen joined the San Diego Yoga Community last Fall!

One sunny day while I was waiting to pick up my son from Kensington Preschool, I crossed paths with a "radiant red-head," who happened to be Rebecca Villa, the founder and owner of Yen4Zen Yoga in Kensington. My family had recently moved from Chicago and I was dying to get back on the mat and teach. This happenstance moment was the universe answering my prayers! Rebecca invited me to join her family/staff at Yen4Zen, and I am so blessed to be a part of her yoga journey.

Rebecca's studio stands apart for several reasons. Let me tell you why...
Being a practitioner for several years I have pretty much been in every kind of yoga school from your average studio to warehouses, yurts, tomato farm huts, parks, beaches, hostels... Yes, everywhere!
The studio is a quaint sanctuary, painted it soft hues of green and decorated in deities, its a pleasantly sweet place to meditate and practice yoga... while listening to the soft hum of life on Adams Ave. Rebecca has captured the essence of a yoga sanctuary.

The saying, "good things come in small packages" is definitely appropriate for this studio. As an Instructor, I have embraced this studio and its unique energy. It allows for the Instructor to work individually with each practitioner. It is much easier to be attentive to each yogis individual needs in a smaller space or with smaller class size.

When we begin down our yogic paths we are drawn to different schools, spaces, styles of teaching... Dipping in and out, developing an appetite/addiction for yoga!
So, I invite you to taste Yen4Zen, I don't believe you will be disappointed!

The Community of Kensington has truly embraced the studio, as it allows most students to roll out of bed or take a short stroll to their mats! Not bad! Saturday Mornings a small group of yogis meet at the Ken Cafe for a cup of Joe and a brisk walk to follow. After there coffee/tea "walk&talk" they head over to the studio for a morning Vinyasa Practice with "me", Gabrielle.
I thought this would be a great way to take our practice and energy off the mat and into the community. Supporting local business and strolling the beautiful neighborhood of Kensington... In hopes it will stir curiosity and our following will grow!

We we also be at the Adams Ave. Healing Arts and Roots Fest, the last weekend in April, so please come check us out! We will be teaching Family and Kids Yoga to all...
Check us out on the web: Yen4ZenYoga.com for current schedules, upcoming workshops, events, etc
Yen4Zen shares space with Good Vibrations Family Chiropractic in Kensington, 4060 Adams Ave.

Jaynes Pinot Noir Flight Tonight Tuesday: Sonoma, Oregon and Burgundy

Tonight we are featuring of flight of three of our favorite Pinot Noir here at Jaynes: 2008 Robert Sinskey Vineyards from Sonoma, 2009 Evening Lands from Eola-Amity Oregon and the 2008 Faiveley Mercurey from the Cotes Chalonnaise region of Burgundy.   Pinot Noir Flight $16

We have featured the Robert Sinskey Vineyard Pinot Noir here at Jaynes since our first night.  Robert Sinskey Vineyards is a small winery based in the town of Sonoma California that creates some of the finest Pinot Noir in the United States.   Elegant and complex at excellent prices for their quality.   For our California dollar theres just nothing like Sonoma for Pinot Noir.  The cool coastal climate with winds from the San Pablo Bay and dense morning fog works perfectly with the hot California daytime sun.   This two-faced climate gives the wine a nice tannic backbone inside delicious well ripened fruit.  RSV is a pioneer in Biodynamic and Organic farming in CA and especially famous for their four legged weed eating sheep!

Our second featured wine is the 2009 Evening Lands Pinot Noir from the Eola-Amity Hills in Oregon.   This wine has quickly become a sommeliers cult favorite: elegant and complex but most important very tasty!   We think this is a perfect example of Oregon Pinot

The third wine in our flight takes us to Burgundy, specifically to Mercurey in the Cotes Chalonnaise region.   Here we see some of the inspiration for the previous two wines.   The vines used to create the 2008 Domaine Faiveley Mercurey are as old as 50 years old.  Their struggle through clay and limestone soils adds great minerality.  This is a fantastic wine from a historic house and an excellent example of old world winemaking.

Jaynes New Tuesday Wine Flight Series. Tonight: Italy

We are very excited to announce the start of our Jaynes Tuesday Night Wine Flight Series.   This week we have dug out 3 stellar bottles that you likely won't find anywhere else here in San Diego.  The flight is $16.   Please read on about these fantastic wines.

The first wine in our flight is from the Liguria region in northwest Italy also known as the Italian Riviera. We first enjoyed this last spring when Kate Macwilliamson from Kermit Lynch Wines had dinner with winemaker Palio Ruffino at Jaynes. The Ruffino family has been working the vineyards carved out of the treacherous cliffs above the ocean for nearly 500 years. The region produces about 75 different types of wine from approximately 90 different grape varieties. Some of these such as Barbera, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese are recognized internationally, while other lesser known grapes like Cruvin, Pigato , Albana, and Rossese present beautiful examples that are distinct and worth seeking out.  Tonight we will be serving the 2009 Punta Crena Cruvin.

For our next selection we travel to Piedmont and one of the most noble grapes in the world Nebbiolo.  Hear the pronunciation here by Nebbiolo king Aldo Vacca from Produttori Del Barbaresco. It is grown within the Langhe east of Barolo and is inspired by "la nebbia" or the fog that rolls into the area during fall delaying the ripening process. The producer Sylvio Germano (who is not even listed in the phonebook) shared with our friend Jeremy Parzen at dobianchi.com "I'm in no hurry to let people know about my wines".  Tonight we will be serving the 2009 Giamello Villa Gentiana Langhe Nebbiolo. We'll let the wine speak for itself, Sylvio.

Down to Tuscany to  Diego Molinari's small estate of Cerbaiona. The winery consists of just 1.5 hectares or roughly 4 acres and produces only 500-600 cases a year of some of the world's finest Sangiovese. Diego's philosophy of low yields and organic farming help to create wines that fully express the terroir or sense of place.   The grapes are harvested by hand and fermentation takes place in cement tanks. The Brunello is aged in casks for four years and is bottled with no filtration to age for at least six months before being released. Tongiht we are pouring the 2002 Cerbaiona Brunello Di Montalcino.  We shared this with friends at the bar a few weeks ago and the wine expressed flavors of dried porcinis, wet leaves, and stewed berries.   Good Brunello in a wine flight?  Get your butt down here...

Thank you for helping us become a wine destination and we look forward to sharing a glass and hearing your thoughts.
