The Gastropub Phenomenon: Jaynes featured in today's San Diego Union Tribune.
We heard this over and over again back in 2006 and early 2007 when we were just opening Jaynes. Times sure have changed and this past year has seen a tidal wave of "Gastropub" openings. Maureen Clancy has a great feature in today's Union Tribune about what she calls the "Gastropub Phenomenon" and features Jayne as San Diego's pioneering pub mistress alongside some excellent new places like our good friend Nate Stanton's Craft and Commerce. There's some great wine picks from Jon as well as Jayne's very detailed Gambas Al Aljillo recipe for the home cook. Great read Maureen!

Musings on the Construction of a San Diego First: Jaynes Gastropub
The past few years have been filled with its' challenges for a lot of us and I hope everyone is hanging in there. I dug out a few pics from our early construction in 2006 that really brought me back and made me examine how far we've come. I personally did about 90% of the construction with my bare hands, from the underground plumbing up through the mosaic tile floor, bar and wainscoting all the way up to the tin ceiling. I grew up in Westport, Connecticut in a house built in 1787 and practically lived in a construction site until I left home at 18. There's something about these old places that is creepy to some and completely intoxicating to others. I half-joked throughout the Jaynes construction that this building became like Stephen King's Christine. As I stripped away the junky previous remodels and carefully returned the structure back to its 1929 glory, the building took on a life of its own and somehow made the work easier and easier for me. I tried to hire people to take some of the load but it rarely worked out. I guess she just got jealous. Theres no way I could have hired a general contractor to do this job. It had to be me.
My father taught me a lot about carpentry starting when I was very young. I was 8 years old and helping my dad frame a woodshed one day when I gave my thumb a real whack driving home a 16 penny nail. As I sucked on my throbbing thumb my dad told me, "you're not a real carpenter until you've hit your thumb 1000 times." I went right back to work. While I've far surpassed that 1000 hit mark and my throbbing thumb has been replaced by the complexities of adulthood, this little phrase stays with me and tells me to just suck it up and keep working. Thank you for reading and for sticking with Jaynes all these years.

Jaynes Gastropub Serves up Braised Short Ribs, Irish Coffee, Scottish Whiskey & ROCK and ROLL
Hello, everyone! We've been busy bees lately here at Jaynes. Jayne has been working hard in the kitchen developing new recipes and making sure everything is just right while Jon has been galavanting around town playing guitar with his new band The Fairmounts spreading the Jaynes gospel via 60's R&B dance numbers.
We're making a lot of great changes moving into the winter season. It's no secret that Jayne and Jon left their hearts in San Francisco and almost every evening we hear from our guests how much Jaynes feels like SF. A little rain and a dip in temp just puts at ease and fits what we do. This weekend we are bringing back one of our all time most popular fall dishes along with a 10 out of 10 dessert. We suggest pairing this dessert with a little Scotch/Irish snort to keep the bones warm.
Braised Short Ribs
Over baby Carrots, baby turnips, English Peas and Roasted Pearl Onions with Garlic Mash and a Port Wine Reduction.
Brioche Bread Pudding
with Pecans and Currants served with Vanilla Gelato and Caramel
(wow this one turned out good...)
Buena Vista Irish Coffee
The San Francisco Classis done the Classic way with Tullamore Dew Whiskey and Hand Whipped Cream
New Single Malt Scottish Whiskeys:
Oban 14, Ardbeg 12, Lagavulin 16, Laphroiag 10, Glenlivet 12...
We hope to see you all this weekend and don't forget about our Sunday Brunch from 10-2. Enjoy a Full English Breakfast, Bloody Marys, Killer French Toast and more on one of San Diego's most beautiful patios. Doggies Welcome!

What's Jayne Cooking up in the Kitchen this Week? What's Erik Mixing at the Bar?
FALL MENU NEWS:
Petrale Sole served with a broth of large, heirloom runner beans, linguica sausage, cherry tomatoes, garlic and baby spinach. This delicate fish recipe was inspired by one of Jayne and Jon's favorite downtown San Francisco haunts and arguably San Francisco's first restaurant, Tadich Grill. Well over a hundred years old and still no website. Gotta love it.
Chicken al Mattone or "Under Brick". This Tuscan classic creates the most perfectly cooked chicken this side of Montalcino. Herb marinated, Jidori chicken and garlic mashed potatoes with a Aurugula and Cherry tomato salad with shaved aged parmesan. The ancient cooking technique "Al Mattone" allows for even cooking throughout the chicken and produces a decadently crispy skin.
Friday and Saturday: Tribal Caught Wild Silver Salmon from Washington...
IN COCKTAIL NEWS:
Erik has been creating some killer new cocktails and he really wants to make them for you. If you haven't dug into our cocktail program yet, now is a great time. We use the highest quality artisanal spirits, fresh fruit, premium ice, bottled British mixers (no soda gun) along with housemade syrups and the best bitters around. Erik has an exceptionally balanced palate and above has a laser focus upon making you one truly memorable cocktail.
Aviation- Plymouth Gin, Luxardo Maraschino Liquer, Creme de Violette and Fresh Lemon
Dark and Stormy-Gosling's Black Seal Rum, Housemade Ginger Syrup, Ginger Beer and Fresh Lime
Bramble-Bols Genever, muddled Blackberries, Creme de Mure and Fresh Lemon
Thursday is Mussel Night! Thursday we feature local Carlsbad Mussels with Spanish chorizo, Braised Leeks, Heirloom Cherry Tomatoes, Garlic and White Wine with Grilled La Brea Baguette. This night is becoming very popular over this dish alone. If you like Mussels this night is a must. We are also featuring $5 Pimm's Cups and $3 Guinness or Trumer Pints for 30th on 30th
Our Saturday Wine Tasting Series continues with bartender Erik up at the Bar. We're going to break out some incredible bottles this week. Don't miss it. 3 wines for $10
Phew!!Theres a lot happening at Jaynes these day. We hope to see you all this weekend!

Arthur Guinness Day, Saturday Tasting Series with Kermit Lynch Wines and John Cusack provides insight into why Jaynes takes a pass on Restaurant Week
Tonight Friday the 24th we celebrate Arthur Guinness Day. Come celebrate Mr G.'s brithday with a creamy 20oz imperial pint for just $3
Our special this weekend is Bacon Wrapped Filet Mignon with garlic mashed potatoes, grilled asparagus, wild mushrooms and a tarragon butter.
Jaynes does not participate in Restaurant Week. Think of us as your oasis at the top of 30th Street. A guest recently asked us why. I feel the answer can best be summed up by this clip featuring Mr. John Cusack in the 1989 Cameron Crowe directed romantic comedy Say Anything.

Jaynes Gastropub: Let September Wine Month Begin!
Jaynes is going all out for September Wine Month with wine flights, a Saturday tasting series and a heavyweight Central European Wine dinner on Tuesday the 21st. I know September is still a day away but lets get started a day early...
Tuesday through Thursday this week were are featuring a 3G Wine Flight. No, this isn't a reference to my last iphone that actually worked, I'm talking about Gruner, Grasevina and Pinot Grigio.
2009 Domaine Wachau 'Federspiel' Gruner Veltiner
There is perhaps no white wine more versatile than Austria's Gruner Veltiner. The Domaine Wachau is a Jaynes staff favorite with ripe apple/grapefruit notes, crisp acidity and stony minerality. This wine just seems to pair with everything.
2008 Zdjelarevic Grasevina (say that 3 times fast)
Jaynes is fortunate to be among the very few restaurants in San Diego to be really digging into the wines of Central Europe. Gravesina is the Croatian planting of the ancient Welschrielsing. Zdjelarevic hand harvests their grapes and ages sur lie in stainless steel. This process, most often seen in the production of Muscadet in the Loire Valley, adds complexity and richness to the wine.
2008 Venica 'Jesera' Pinot Grigio
Pinot Grigio, perhaps the most bastardized and maligned grape variety in the world. The Collio region of Friuli in Northeastern Italy along the Slovenian border was one of those winemaking regions that woke up to how unique a wine could be and opened the door to great Pinot Grigio. The winemakers from the region, on both sides of the border, make some of the world's most unique wines and appear to have little interest in biasing their wines towards an international palate. The often insipid, flat flavor profile is replaced with beautiful aromatics, a full, rich mouthfeel and a color like Provence rose'.
flight $12
September Saturdays Wine Tasting Series
3 tastes are just $10.

We don't do wine dinners very often, but when we do we just have to go all out.

Normal Heights in the News
"The American economy has been in a downturn the last few years, but there has been little evidence of it on flourishing Adams Avenue. From January 2008 until July 2010, 68 businesses opened in the 600-member business improvement district, which stretches from Park Boulevard in University Heights to the eastern edge of Kensington. Additionally, 25 existing business owners reinvested in their operations, adding or enhancing their space..."

Jaynes Gastropub, San Diego's First: $3 Guinness Imperial Pints Until September 24th, 2010
"That's my name, don't wear it out"
There has been a tidal wave of places calling themselves a Gastropub here in San Diego over the past few months. When we started building this business nearly 5 years ago, the term was a real headscratcher and we were often asked why we decided to bring this concept to San Diego.
Jayne's mother and father, Ann and Frank, had managed pubs in Liverpool throughout the 60's and 70's including the Liverpool institution, the Shipperies. After emigrating to the states in the 1980's, Jayne and her brother Franklin worked at the now legendary Shakespeare Pub here in San Diego where a 16 year old Jayne Battle often awoke at dawn to pull pints for the eager satellite tv football fans. Pubs are simply a part of being a Battle, from 30th Street to the banks of the River Mersey.
"Its time to pour some Guinness"
Beginning tonight we will be pouring 20oz Imperial Pints of Guinness for just $3 until September 24th, 2010, Arthur Guinness' birthday.
This is one of our ways to thank everyone for their continued support of San Diego's First Gastropub. Lets all ride out the summer in creamy goodness!
This week we are also serving housemade British Sausage rolls of Spiced Pork Sausage inside Puffed Pastry with a Apple/Frisee' Salad with Mustard Vinaigrette. We hope to see a lot of you this month. I have a sneaking suspicion we will....

Jaynes Week in Preview: Voted SD's Most Romantic, St Germain, Curb Appeal and the Debut of Jon's new band "The Fairmounts"
Never one to rest on our laurels, last week we started a gang of building facade improvements including flowers, paint, lighting and this incredible handpainted sign in the alley by our good friend and local artist/wallscaper Andy Crane. Here's Andy getting started. Come by and check out the final product!
Sunday brunch is absolutely delicious and we've been featuring carafes of St. Germain White Sangria, a blend of St Germain Elderflower Liqeur, Sauvignon Blanc and Fresh Fruit. St. Germain is made from fresh, hand picked elderflower blossoms, a honeysuckle plant relative and is one of those great, mysterious European potions that adds harmony and complexity to everything it touches. We will now be serving this wonderful bevvy at dinner service as well. Feel free to ask your bartender or server for other St. Germain based concoctions.
Our weekly plat du jour menu specials continue.
Tuesday is Burger and Any Draft for $15!
Wednesday is Southern Night: featuring Buttermilk Fried Chicken, Mash, Collard Greens and Corn Bread.
Thursday is Mussel Night now featuring Loire Valley Sur Lie Muscadet by the glass.
Daniel came up with a serious hit recently of Pan Seared Alaskan Halibut over a summer salad of sweet white corn, heirloom cherry tomatoes, grilled asparagus, crispy wonton strip finished with a yellow tomato coulis. We'll be serving this refreshing summer dish Tuesday-Thursday this week.
For those fans of our music selections you might want to come to Jaynes on Friday night the 13th, then bop on over to the Riviera Supper Club in La Mesa to see the debut of Jon's new rhythm and blues band, "The Fairmounts". Music is Jon's first love (OK maybe second behind you know who ; ) and this new outfit really has their act together. Band starts at 9:30 and plays until about 11:30. Admission is free, cocktails are solid and the music will be hot. This will be a very fun show. We'd love to have your support.
We hope to see you all this week!
