Massage heals the tissues of the body
Saturday, April 09, 2011 by: James Schreiber
(NaturalNews) Brush aside any thoughts that massage is only a luxury splurge that has no real health benefits. To the contrary, hands-on healing helps you unwind, lowers blood pressure, promotes muscle relaxation and boosts your immune system. During a massage session, massage therapists use their hands and fingers to press and manipulate your skin, tendons, ligaments and muscles. The strokes gently move your blood, oxygen and lymph to various tissues and organs in a way that normally doesn't happen in the bodies of most people. As a result, the person who is receiving the massage experiences a level of physical and mental renewal that is hard to surpass.
Hidden Health Benefits of Human Touch
Today, numerous well respected studies indicate that massage therapy doesn't only feel good, it also may be good for you. Take a look at the health benefits below and discover the power of human touch:
- Stress & anxiety relief
- Muscle relaxation
- Blood pressure control
- Better circulation
- Pain reduction
- Enhanced cancer treatment
- Improved quality of sleep
Mark Rapaport, M.D., and his colleagues from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center followed 53 healthy adults who were divided into two groups: The participants received either 45 minutes of Swedish massage or the same amount of time of light touch massage, which is much milder and served mainly as a comparison to the more vigorous Swedish massage. After examining their blood samples, the scientists found that people in the Swedish massage group experienced a decrease in cortisol and a significant increase in lymphocytes, cells that keep our immune system strong.
"More research is ahead of us but it appears that a single massage may deliver a measurable benefit," Rapaport said in a news release.
Massage is far more potent therapy than most people realize. In fact, it can (and should) replace analgesics as a treatment for tension headaches. As it turns out, it takes only a 30-minute massage on cervical trigger points to boost autonomic nervous system regulation and alleviate the symptoms. Patients also report an improvement in their psychological and physiological state, which goes hand in hand with the reduction in stress and anxiety associated with such a disturbing condition.
Stress and lack of rest have devastating effects on our health, fitness and beauty. Don't be afraid to find yourself a good massage therapist and get some healing on a regular basis. When you're taking care of your skin and what's beneath it, you are taking care of your whole world.

Introducing, Yen4Zen Yoga Studio!!
For those of you who have yet to be enlightened... There's a new Yoga Studio in town!
Yen4Zen joined the San Diego Yoga Community last Fall!
One sunny day while I was waiting to pick up my son from Kensington Preschool, I crossed paths with a "radiant red-head," who happened to be Rebecca Villa, the founder and owner of Yen4Zen Yoga in Kensington. My family had recently moved from Chicago and I was dying to get back on the mat and teach. This happenstance moment was the universe answering my prayers! Rebecca invited me to join her family/staff at Yen4Zen, and I am so blessed to be a part of her yoga journey.
Rebecca's studio stands apart for several reasons. Let me tell you why...
Being a practitioner for several years I have pretty much been in every kind of yoga school from your average studio to warehouses, yurts, tomato farm huts, parks, beaches, hostels... Yes, everywhere!
The studio is a quaint sanctuary, painted it soft hues of green and decorated in deities, its a pleasantly sweet place to meditate and practice yoga... while listening to the soft hum of life on Adams Ave. Rebecca has captured the essence of a yoga sanctuary.
The saying, "good things come in small packages" is definitely appropriate for this studio. As an Instructor, I have embraced this studio and its unique energy. It allows for the Instructor to work individually with each practitioner. It is much easier to be attentive to each yogis individual needs in a smaller space or with smaller class size.
When we begin down our yogic paths we are drawn to different schools, spaces, styles of teaching... Dipping in and out, developing an appetite/addiction for yoga!
So, I invite you to taste Yen4Zen, I don't believe you will be disappointed!
The Community of Kensington has truly embraced the studio, as it allows most students to roll out of bed or take a short stroll to their mats! Not bad! Saturday Mornings a small group of yogis meet at the Ken Cafe for a cup of Joe and a brisk walk to follow. After there coffee/tea "walk&talk" they head over to the studio for a morning Vinyasa Practice with "me", Gabrielle.
I thought this would be a great way to take our practice and energy off the mat and into the community. Supporting local business and strolling the beautiful neighborhood of Kensington... In hopes it will stir curiosity and our following will grow!
We we also be at the Adams Ave. Healing Arts and Roots Fest, the last weekend in April, so please come check us out! We will be teaching Family and Kids Yoga to all...
Check us out on the web: Yen4ZenYoga.com for current schedules, upcoming workshops, events, etc

A Return to Yang Energy
Spring is the beginning of the year for many cultures and a time of new growth. In Chinese medicine, spring is a time of the return to yang energy. As we look around us, the plants are growing green once again. In climates with cold winters this is very apparent. The water that forms from the melting snow nourishes the plants and trees and is transformed into abundant green growth and flowers. The characteristic green color of spring growth in nature is why the Chinese associate spring with green.
For those of us practicing feng shui, it is important to keep our wood element area clean of clutter and harmoniously filled with plants, wood objects, and green color. Feng shui is, quite simply, the art of placement. Organizing your home and work space can improve the quality of your life. The East and South East areas belong to the wood element which governs spring time. Another benefit to organizing these areas is an increase in wealth, which I am sure most of us could benefit from in these challenging times.
According to the Inner Classics, one of the time-tested classics of Chinese medicine, this is the time of year to “rise early with the sun” and take “brisk walks”. This brings us to our next point. Exercise! Exercise! Exercise! As the yang energy of the season returns to the world around us, it also rises inside of us. When we exercise, we circulate the energy in our whole body. This allows the yang energy of the season to nourish us deep in our organs and out to the surface of our skin. The Inner Classics go on to say this about spring:
The supernatural forces of spring create wind in heaven and wood upon the earth. Within the body they create the liver and the tendons; they create the green color … and give the voice the ability to make a shouting sound … they create the eyes, the sour flavor, and the emotion of anger.
As mentioned above, this is the season to address the liver. When it comes to diet, this season is all about cleansing. Eating too many fatty and heavy foods bogs down the liver and decreases its function. The diet should be light with an emphasis on sweet and pungent flavored foods. A great example of this is mint tea with honey. Brewing mint tea for longer than ten minutes helps activate the qi or energy of the liver. Complex carbohydrates such as legumes, grains and seeds have a sweet flavor which increases with sprouting. Food preparation in spring is simpler and raw foods can be eaten more abundantly. Young carrots, beets and other sweet starchy vegetables are also sweet in nature. Add some pungent spices such as basil, fennel, marjoram, rosemary, caraway, dill and bay leaf and you have a healthy spring meal. May you have a healthy and prosperous spring!

Football is Coming... And so is Rosie's Annual Chili Cookoff!!!
The format will change slightly this year to allow for more contestants and even better judging. During every Sunday Night Football game we will showcase 2 batches of chili for all in attendance to enjoy and judge. At the end of the season, the top 5 will compete for the coveted prize and title of Chili Champion.
Come in and sign-up with any bartender soon, so you are sure to get the game you want! The list fills up fast and we have a lot of fun with this. If you don't want to make chili for the masses, come in every sunday evening for a drink and a bowl (of chili, of course!). Let your opinion be heard... YOU be the judge!
